And now, since 3D is now available for the hand held Nintendo systems, Sega released a new game called Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystals. Sonic Boom is the title of the animated television series on Cartoon Network, and there are also two games following Sonic and his friends that are set within the same universe, including Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. The story for Shattered Crystal is that Amy has been captured by a robotic snake named Lyric. The Worm Tunnel levels take elements from the special stages found in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 mixed with the rail levels that have been in the franchise for awhile now. The foundations for a successful, new take on Sonic are present in Shattered Crystal. *Originally I concluded this review by saying that Shattered Crystal is worse than Rise of Lyric. Gameplay While the first Sonic Game in the three Game deal between Nintendo and SEGA (of which this is the third and final) took the Sonic series in a totally different direction than any other Game before it, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal leans more toward traditional Genesis-like Gameplay with new gimmicks and abilities. It has you moving through an obstacle-laden, labyrinthine level, defeating enemies, gathering coins, and exploring the level for hidden trinkets such as pieces of the titular shattered crystal and blueprints to be used at Tails's personal workshop. With some new faces and some old familiar ones, it’s… Yeah, this review probably comes far too late for anyone looking for help in making the decision to buy the game, but I do think it was a fun primer setting up the later release of the 3DS sequel, Sonic Boom… Unlike the Sonic the Hedgehog games released on the Sega Genesis, the “camera” allows better foresight for consecutive split-second decisions, such as swinging over a pit to then torpedo into an enemy, which sets up a double jump so that Sonic can crash through a breakable wall. The main type of level is the one that appears most in the game.
